Podcast | 15 Years of ‘Vested’: Crafting Effective Relationships With Supply Chain Partners

June 26, 2026

The “vested” model for creating successful supply chain relationships is more than 15 years old. How’s it holding up?

“What’s in for me shifts to what’s in it for we.” That, in a nutshell, is how Kate Vitasek has described the basic concept behind the “vested” philosophy of buyer-supplier relations. An author, lecturer and member of the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Vitasek first defined the theory in 2010, in Vested Outsourcing: Five Rules That Will Transform Outsourcing, a book co-authored with Mike Ledyard and Karl B. Mandrodt. Drawing on a research study by the University of Tennessee with the United States Air Force, the book uncovered the many flaws that hamper outsourcing relationships, and proposed a whole new approach that replaces transactional thinking with an emphasis on seeking mutual advantage. Now, Vitasek is back with her ninth work on the topic, The Vested Way: Five Rules for Achieving the Impossible. She returns to The SupplyChainBrain Podcast to discuss how the concept has evolved over the decades, and why it’s more relevant than ever. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
