Wonder why there are component shortages

NPA Insights, June 2026

Hi all!

Logistics operators face compounding pressures from rising fuel costs, labor shortages, extreme heat, and weather disruptions, intensifying challenges this summer. Diesel prices surged nearly 50% since February 2026, squeezing margins and pushing operators to increase load density by 19% early in the year to maximize efficiency.

Other challenges include worker retention issues, extreme heat threatening productivity and safety, and severe weather events causing widespread supply chain disruptions. A fundamental issue is limited real-time visibility across disconnected systems, hampering fast decision-making during disruptions.

While summer challenges have always existed, growing complexity and customer expectations demand logistics leaders focus on improving communication, flexibility, and responsiveness to thrive amid ongoing uncertainty.

AND NOW SOME OPERATIONS NEWS

The State of Manufacturing

The Manufacturing PMI Index registered 54% in May, an increase of 1.3 percentage points from April. This is the highest PMI reading since it registered 55.9% in May 2022.

The New Orders Index expanded for the fifth consecutive month after four straight readings in contraction, registering 56.8%, up 2.7 percentage points from April’s 54%.

May's Production Index registered 54.3%, 0.9 percentage point higher than April’s reading of 53.4 percent.

The U.S. drone industry’s supply chain resilience is under intense focus as government efforts push for expanded domestic manufacturing and reduced dependence on foreign suppliers. At the Northeast National Security Conference, experts highlighted critical supply chain risks hidden beyond Tier 1 suppliers, emphasizing the need for diversification, redundancy, and greater visibility to prevent cascading disruptions from factors like material shortages or geopolitical conflicts.

Accelerating innovation was identified as essential, with new approaches involving earlier venture capital support to help startups quickly transition technologies from development to government adoption. Ultimately, building a resilient defense industrial base means prioritizing adaptable, interoperable systems and robust supplier partnerships, making industrial readiness as vital as technology itself for sustaining the drone supply chain.
