Podcast | What Will It Really Take to Reshore Manufacturing Back to the U.S.?

November 21, 2025

High tariffs aren’t enough to bring manufacturing back to the United States. What will it really take to make that happen?

There’s wide consensus among U.S. industry that the return of offshored manufacturing capacity would be a positive trend. And one might argue that the multiple rounds of Trump tariffs were designed in part to incentivize that. But tariffs aren’t enough to make reshoring economically viable. On this episode, we talk about what needs to happen for a revitalization of American manufacturing to succeed. Our guest is Matt Dollard, senior industrials analyst with RSM, a network of accounting and professional services firms with a focus on the middle market. He covers the big challenges: availability of skilled labor, access to energy, logistics, raw materials, sub-suppliers and need for a rules-based international trade framework supported by long-term policy predictability. That’s a very long checklist. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
