American car manufacturer Tesla is being forced to recall almost all of the vehicles it has sold in the U.S. because some of the warning lights on the cars’ instrument panels are too small.
According to the Associated Press, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on February 2 the recall of almost 2.2 million Tesla vehicles sold in the U.S. The NHTSA also said that it had upgraded its 2023 investigation into Tesla’s steering problems to an engineering analysis.
The organization said that it was able to identify the problem during a routine safety compliance audit January 8.
The NHTSA said that the Tesla antilock brake, park and brake warning lights have font sizes that are smaller than the required federal safety standards, making it more difficult for drivers to read important safety information.
The agency said that the warning light recall would be completed through an online software update covering Model S cars from 2012 to 2023, Model X cars from 2016 to 2023, Model 3 cars from 2017 to 2023, Model Y cars from 2019 to 2024 and the 2024 Cybertruck. Tesla said that it has already begun deploying the software update with plans to notify owners of the upgrade by letter starting March 30.
Tesla added that it has been able to identify three warranty claims that are potentially related to the font problem, though the company has received no reports of injuries or crashes.
