2022 NPAs Boston Startups to Watch & more
Hi all!
Cleantech investment exploded in 2021 — the first half of the year alone saw over $60 billion flow to climate-tech startups. That momentum could continue this year. It’s estimated that 14% of VC dollars will go to climate techs.
We love the Winter Olympics at NPA!
Watching these incredible athletes from around the globe compete is stunning and heartbreaking at the same time.

Did you know China has the most extensive snow-making operations in the history of the Winter Games? All competitions will take place almost entirely on artificial snow for the first time.
AND NOW SOME OPERATIONS NEWS
This Operations Update is provided with support from:
The State of Manufacturing

The new year has not been too good in the manufacturing sector.

The PMI Index continues to decrease and finished at 57.6%.

In January, 17 of 18 industries reported a sharp increase in prices.

Orderbooks also saw a dip in many sectors.
EPE Components, a reliable component brokerage company, contributed these very helpful insights about the ongoing chip shortage situation:

The late December flood in Malaysia continues to impact the global electronics supply chains.

NDK, a quartz crystal producer, suspended production at two of its Malaysian plants in late December and announced that it expects to resume production again in April 2022.

Panasonic’s factory has meanwhile resumed normal operations but expects some continued delays as material suppliers are still in recovery mode.

Renesas, Nexperia, On Semi, Taiyo Yuden and, Nichicon all report that operations are back to normal, though some delays will remain.

General electronics lead times remain very long. Some OEMs keep extending their lead times, with several having their bookings filled for 2022 and partly through 2023.
STARTUP STUFF
Boston-area startups raised $1.2B in January: biotech startups (as usual) led the way with $547M, followed by Cleantech & Greentech startups, which raised $271M:

  • Factorial Energy raised $200 million to help commercialize solid-state EV batteries.
  • Seurat Technologies raised $21 million to help decarbonize manufacturing and address supply chain issues with its Area Printing Technology.
